I thought you guys would like to see some pics of my first coolant filter. Granted the filter is still wet and it is currently drying out but none the less, you can see the junk in this thing.
Now why in the world would anyone want a coolant filter????????
Yea, and I was just showing the wife and noticed a bunch of sand sticking to the inside of the coolant housing.....
No wonder the water pumps don't last much more then 200K, LOL, might as well sand blast them and then go buy a new water pump and keep sand blasting them!
No more sand for me though! I'm filtering all that crap out and the rust too.
Changed my buddies water pump the other day and he has rust in his engine. I wiped it out with a paper towel but that does nothing to get the other crap out of the engine.
BIG TRUCKS have coolant filters from the factory, I don't know why Ford didn't install them on the SDs in the first place, I got my coolant filter setup from Bob at Dieselsite years ago and its absolutely great and with the great bracket he provided it looks factory installed!
Great pics Viss, the proof is there, wether dropout or casting sand, these waterpumps are dropping like flies and although not seriously expensive, I'd like to keep that buck forty for other things. Nice kit Bob sells. Here's my setup and what I pulled out of mine Casting Sand or other bi-products in coffee filters and this pic is when I first decided to go with a coolant filtration system. this last pic the date was wrong so disregard. Changing out the t-stat for the 100,000 mile interval and coolant, the stamped steel housing wasn't helping things either..As you can see from the dates, the discovery of the t-stat mess, then decided to get the DS system then 6 months later a filter change and there you have it.

Reason: Wrong date on last pic!!!!camera malfunction
Exactly!
Looks like you got more Sand out of yours though. How long was it on your truck before you pulled it? I only had mine on for about 4 months or so.
And none the less, I prefer to not have to replace water pumps and I can imagine all that sand has to be settling some where and maybe even causing pockets where the temps get hotter then they should. With the sand floating around I'm sure it's also eating away at things that should not be eating away at.

I agree, more casting sand from what people say here. DS said to change the first filter after 3 months then another then every year after those couple changes but decided to extend the first so I could see the first initial change. SpringerPop just to name a few told me to watch my coolant flow from the hose going into the degass bottle, there you get a good look if the flow slows down a bit you know your getting close to a filter change. Yes, I learned here and from Bob's site that those contaminates will eat seals and bearings leading to waterpump failure so, besides the mods I have, I am trying to get the most miles I can get with some very inexpensive precautionary mods.

Where can I get the info for this mod. It seems like something that everyone should do.
This is the one I have though I like his setup better, nice blue hose, looks like a rugged housing and looks like his doesn't bump into the radiator hose like mine does. Eh, it works though. http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...WPROD&ProdID=8
You can get the replacement bullet housing from clay. That will get rid of your rusting at the thermostat.
Not to sound ignorant but beings theres so much proof that these filtering setups work with all the pics and documentation, that I don't see more people running them. But again, its all personal choice. I wished I knew about this site when I bought my truck because this system would have been my first order of business.
I agree and I believe you are the person that put that on my todo list in the first place. When I saw your pics I though "Oh *H!! I better get a filter in there". I plan on having this truck for a very long time and if I expect it to take care of me well then I better take care of it and the nice thing is my wife understands my state of mind. She understands that most of what I do for my truck is to extend it's life expectancy, get more fuel efficiency and to hopefully have one less thing to worry about when driving my rigs around.
Thnaks for sharing Visseroth, I sure am moving that to the top of my mod list. I like Mikes blue lines too, would match my blue under hood theme. Did that come from "GUZZLE", Mike? I don't know if i'll do the billet housing though Springer Pop was able to get a good seal by cleaning and surfacing his stamped steel housing, so I think I will just do that. Regardless Pictures are worth a 1000 words. I have a new stat on the workbench I think I will wait till I get my coolant filtration system before I install it now.

Glad to help, thats what its all about. I do remember now you were interested. You have a keeper there thats for sure. My wife understands now too, she didn't in the begining but with the cost of new vehicles now not to mention the economy, it pays some to just keep up on things and it saves in the long run.

Actually I was offered that high strength Goodyear hose from Roland (Mueckster) back before I installed the kit but he said you can get it at a place call Grainger I believe but not 100% sure. You could always search around or PM him, he'd be glad to clarify the store if I'm wrong. Roland also sanded and cleaned and painted his housing and reused it and he reported no problems since. The billet housing is nice and compliments the engine compartment nicely but a few of us did experience leaks so its your call. I put a very small bead around the contact point of the mating surface and all is good now. Great idea waiting for everything, do it all the same time and don't forget to check the condition of your lower and upper hoses, if in dout, do them too while your there..
