a friend here in Des Moines is building a 78 f100 and its got a 98 crown vic sub frame he grafted on. Not sure of the measurements on the stub but should get the measurements. If any of you want to follow his build its over here on our Iowa forum: Iowa Minitruck Association - project f-100
Really good pics and VERY in depth step by step. Good readin!!!
Anyone who is considering this IFS needs to pay close attention to the photo above...this truck has a wider track than an F1 or an early F100 and still the wheels are right at the edge of the fenders. Take a look at the wheels...remember what I said about the offset, you can push the rims in much farther than these.
i parted out an 87 vic guy's and my cuz billy came over and we measured it out , and it was the right width or dain close too it for our 53's . so we cut the front clip off and he hauled it away before i scrapped the remains . just in case he had an urge to put an ifs in the front of his . as too now he's sticking with the straight axle but we all know how things change .................. they said the front twin i beam from the 74 frame i put under the 55 was too wide too . and it wasn't the front tires sat about a 1/2 inch inside the fender lip when you dropped the big blocks weight on it . besides if you got a spare frame and time and are inclined to tinker you could modify it a bit and make anything work eventually .............
what about the frt crossmember out of an aerostar? back when these were being produced, i changed several from wrecks. they are bolt in with rack and pinion. i have never measured the tracking width but i would guess it to be similar to an explorer. should be a dime a dozen. any thoughts or info?
I've often wondered about the aerostar set up also. Has any one here tried it?
i had a guy tell me quite some time ago that he did one with the aerostar frt in a '61. i never saw it. and he has been known to be a b.s. artist. and he didn't mention it till i said something about me wanting to check the aerostar frt out. as i remember from working on them, you would have to fab an upper control arm mount/perch. but not a big deal. same wheel pattern too. if i had a pull it salvage yard here, i'd be checking it out. none of the salvages here will let anyone back to check or measure anything. the old vans dont bring anything anymore. so it ought to be a bargain.
