Hello everyone, I am new to working on Fords and have found everyone on this site to be quite helpful. I am currently working on a 351w rebuild, just a basic rebuild to get the clatter out of the motor. My question is more of a why than anything else.
Why are there 2 different firing orders for small block Fords?
From what I have found the 351w and HO 302 use one firing order and the rest use a different one... seems confusing to me. Also, I would have thought Ford would not want to have to run 2 different series of camshafts.
More of a would like to know vs a need to know. If anyone knows the answer, I would love to hear it..
Back when these motors were born the different vehicle lines in an auto company were pretty much different auto companies.. or in other words there was a lot of duplication going on so having two different firing orders for the same engine family wasn't really much of a big deal in the big scheme of things. It is disturbing that they didn't get around to streamlining things until the engine family was 30years old and nearing the end of it's production live in 1994.
Thanks for the info.... I understand what you mean about different vehicle lines with GM having completely different engine lines for at least 5 different companies... huge waste of resources.
IIRC, the 351w and HO 302 have a different firing order as to balance the load on the main bearings.
Actually the 351 and late model 302's which includes the Mustang 5.0 and '94+ truck motors use the same firing order(13726548), it was the earlier 5.0's that had a different firing order(15426378).
