1978 E150 124"WB window van, standard column shift, 300CID engine, Carter 1bbl carb, two factory-option front captain's chairs, and a high output heater. Empty in back except for basic paneling, insulation and 1/2" plywood floor.

When the highway speed limit was still 55mph and with the original L78x15 tires, 22-23mpg.
With 235/75x15 tires, 21-22 highway mpg while the speed limit was still 55.
With 235/75x15 tires at the current 65mph speed limit, 19 highway mpg max.
City mpg from day one has always been between 13-15mpg.

We've had mileage threads before, but here goes: 2002 E150, 4.6, stock 3.55 rear axle and always had Michelin LTX M/S tires on it (factory and replacement set). Mild d'Elegant conversion with factory glass, low roof. Looks like a Club Wagon. No roof racks.

Mileage for 82,000 miles = 16.18 mpg. This is every gallon of gas ever put into the van since new.

Some freeway runs at over 18 if speed is kept down. Typically lightly loaded (we're bicyclists and my son is a bike racer). City mileage, especially in the winter, can be 13-14. We've had 4 big vans in the family (one after another) since 1986 and this is the best van for gas mileage we've ever had.

George

ps I also bought a '78 F100 new, back in 1978, with 300 inch six, 4 speed O/D manual trans, and a 2.75 axle. Very weak kneed but it would routinely get 20-22 mpg on the road, with a best single run of 25+ from Detroit to Cleveland and back...in the days of the 55 mph speed limit. It would have been a lot lighter than Senty8's van, though, and was a short bed stepside.

Driving a 1993 E350 15 passenger with 351 and 3.54 rear axle...

If memory serves correctly about 14 or so mostly highway and when towing pop-up camper and loaded with gear around 9 to 11 mpg.

Yeah I have 3:50 gears, I want 4:10 to increase the city mileage, heavy van needs lower gears to aid in getting it moving.

I get 8.6mpg average for my 95 E350 bus. 460/e4od 4.10 rear. Best I got once was 9.8mpg while tooling around Key West where speeds are never over 45mph. The worst was around 5.5mpg with some rotten gas once. Never went to that gas station again!

Wow...

About the same mileage as my van:
'99 E350 6.8L V-10 15 passenger
9-10 around town; 14-15 highway; 8 towing

I got 16.3 once running totally empty and towing a very light utility trailer. I'm itching to see what the new coil packs will do for the towing mpg.
