I've found on trips setting the cruise at 72 MPH will retain overdrive, anything less will have it searching gears at every little incline, and slower doesn't increase mileage, in years I've learned the speed that is best for mine. I tried 65 MPH once and was near killed by those in a hurry as I was trying to pass the slower semi trucks going up hills, on the way down they find it necessary to ride inches from my bumper to intimidate me to speed up.
Anything on the roof disrupts the aerodynamics, something we're already lacking, you're better off towing it and pass 72 MPG it'll start sucking it back, you want to get a speed that it can retain it's highest gear.

Mine holds OD no problem at 55. That is probably due to the more advanced 4R75W over the E4OD and the more powerful 5.4L than what was issued in earlier years.

I have the 5.4 with a microtuner program in it and the heavier 4r100 series transmission, if I can roast both back tires on a van that crosses the scales at 8000 lbs I think power isn't an issue! I travel the roads with the hills in Tennessee, it will not hold OD at 55 MPH in fact if cruise is on it'll drop to second, but turn OD off and it'll jump up into 3rd. BTW as I mentioned gear ratio is everything, heavy vans shouldn't have 3:55 gears, you have what I need.

You have the 5 speed, only offered in the V-10, allowing for the higher rear axle because it has a lower first gear, the final ratio is the same as the 4 speed OD, wish I had one on my 5.4, but too much wiring to run.

'95: 14 mpg for 70 mph.
'97: 17 mph for 70 mph

Both use about 0.75 gallon/hour in city.

Thanks.
Engine/Trans info are on the signature.

Tires were 235/75/15 and 245s on the '95. No change in mpg. There was a slight change (maybe .5 mpg) when I went from Goodyear Wranglers to smoother Yokohamas.

Work truck? All passenger conversion vans.

'88 e250 7.3 IDI 3.54's c6 with DNE2 O/D 235/85r16

Average over 60k miles (including before O/D and low stall converter)=15.18mpg

Recent trip to Texas, hwy with CC set at 70mpg = about 16.5mpg (forgot the exact). 3 tanks were 17-17.5mpg. Seemed to do better in the steep hills then on rolling ones.

Highest = 18.42mpg (cruise at 60-65mph towing a 4x8 trailer full of luggage)

Lowest = 9.94mpg (all city, bad traffic and heavy foot)

When I first got it seeing 12's and 13's was fairly common. Best prior to O/D install was 16.5mpg all hwy. Now I rarely see anything below 15mpg mixed drivingduring the summer. If I keep the hwy speeds at 60mph with some city mixed in I can usually get high 16's low 17's. Winter time I stay above 14mpg, even with extended idle, winter fuel etc. I really would like change gears to 4.10's and swap in an e4od or 4r100. Better off the line, locking torque converter and, with double O/D, I would still have lower cruising RPMs then I have now.

2000 E-150, everything stock except Ford OEM alloy rims 16x7 from 2004 E-150, with LT245/70-16 load range D tires with on/off-road pattern (BFGoodrich TA/KO).

MPG is not very impressive 13-14 city, and 14 on a highway @ 65-70 mph, perhaps due to Heavy Kargo Master PRO-II luggage rack, and aggressive tires.

I am wondering, much much better MPG would be with highway tires, and without luggage rack?

2000 E150 5.4L with 3.75 gears and 265/75/17 tires. I can not get better than 13 mpg no matter what I do. On "closed course with professional driver" I get the same 12/13 mpg at 80/85 mph (gps reading as the speedo is 10% under)

98 15 Pass V10 3.73: 55MPH w/o A/C hwy: 17.0 MPG; 70 MPH w/A/C hwy=15.7 MPG. K&N air filter installed: 70 MPH w/A/C hwy: 15.7 MPG (no difference between stock and K&N). K&N offers better acceleration from a stoplight-big difference there.

K&N does not filter out fine particles, gravel roads are a hazard due to this, you'll find the throttle body tubing will be full of it, it's why they make a sock to go over the filter on ATVs, increasing the flow of air, by decreasing filtration.
