Hey all, I've been wondering for awhile what instrument cluster came with which truck. My truck which is a '65 F100 has only has one big circular guage display for the Speedo. I've had some people say that that display didn't come on a '65 ad my truck is older? Most of the '65's I've seen have the Horizontal display for the Speedo and other misc. guages? Anyone know which cluster came for what year and what model truck?
The Round speedo (Clock Face Speedo) is the standard speedometer while the long, horizontal one [Swept Faced Speedo] signifies an upgrade usually a Custom Cab. And I totally agree that stands thru 1966 production run.
Twin I beams began with 1965 models so anything with our SLICK 60s body style has to be a 65 or 66 production year truck.
There are other ways to tell also like emblem placement, grille, alternator vs generator, Ranger Option which is ToL version of C-Cab theme & last 6 digits/ characters of your serial number.
If serial number falls between #580001 & #732000 production year is 1965. Units prior to #580001 are 64 & earlier units after #732000 = 66 or later.
Watchout for "pseudo Experts" who tend to confuse everybody/ everything based on what they "think", and not what they look up or research, learned, experienced, were taught or know to be a fact.
And I 2nd Johns' statement about blow tie types' opinions on stuff. IMHO If they knew anything about trucks at all they'd be driving a Ford.
Just to add to eveyone's else's right answer; I also learned that the main other differents beside the front grille between a 65 & 66 F100 2wd is the hood side emblems; 65 have chrome lettering above the plastic insert stating FORD 100 and the 66 version states FORD on top and a smaller recess lettering of 100 on the bottom. I take this as being true; but FBp would know more than I.
Just passing one suspense knowledge too another..
Hope this helps
'Tis true about the emblems. You'll see most '65's that are restored running around with '66 fender emblems because they are the only ones being reproduced.
I don't know why they are only reproducing the '66 emblems, but I may have to get those eventually, mine are all cracked and faded. My truck is a beater at this point....but it still beats owning a Chebby!
At the last Supernationals I talk to a Dennis Carpenter rep; about casting for other models of F100; and the only reply was basically supply & demand. The last good set of 65 emblems on ebay when for $148. Which ain't bad for the quality of those emblems. I got a set recently that I paid more for shipping than the actual auction. But they will need rechroming.
I with ya on finding embelms for other models is sparse picking.
Just to add some more confusion for either FBp or others; I pulled a chrome (Round Speedo) basic style bezels out of my daily driver 66 f100 and place a regular white face round bezel back in; what year would the chrome metal come from?; or its just an after thought options for customcab's;
Also not 100% sure but padded dash was also a custom cab options for 65 models as well. Atleast mine had one in it and I remove it due to cracks etc; the metal dash was in excellent shape no signs of after market installation but seem to be an originial install on my 65 customcab.( not to question or change limegold's comment) But I believe dash pad was a 65 options as well.

The first part is true enough but IMHO the other part is a bit misleading. The reason I say this is the fact that the trucks made a few years prior to 65 were very similar in basic body design. Yes, the 65-66 virtual twins are kind of special but I dont think they are the only "slicks".
I have seen quite a few folks question what the meaning of "slicks" is. I never heard it before I came here myself. I don't recall anyone saying it was limited to the 65-66 production.
The 65-66 Trucks do seem to be the most popular of the 61-66 group. I think because of the fact that these trucks were the beginning of a long run (decades) of compatible parts. Anything prior to 65 is fairly primitive in design and you have to stick with older, harder to find parts. Unless you are willing to make some major changes that is.
