Guage Cluster Swapable?

I have a 1990 f150 with the gauge cluster without the tachometer in it (just has speedo, fuel, oil pressure, temp, and battery). If I order a used cluster with the tach, will it just plug in directly without doing any modifications?

I put an 90 with a tach in my 87 and it plugged right in and works.

only difference in the v8 and 6 tachs is the numbers. the v8 has higher range of rpm

I am inclined to disagree there. For I tried to hook up a v8 to my straight six and it would not work at all. I put in another V6 and it worked just fine.

Different year ranges have different connector pinouts... that is, different wires go to each terminal.

I don't know what clusters are compatible with what years, but whenever I want to swap something and find out the connector pins are in the wrong places, I just pull them out and rearrange them. This doesn't work with everything, but most of the time, if the connector shells are the same, it can be done.

Wonder if a same year swap between v8 trucks would work?

What is where the Tachometer should be? Perhaps a "blank". I picked up a Tachometer from the boneyard for $10 for an 87 as my tachometer was erratic and as others have stated it just plugs in without any modifications. It was a quick fix as I did not have to pull the cluster just the plastic cover for the cluster.

It would be a waste of money to order one as they are very expensive; $100+

Take care

Does your truck have the Speedometer in the center and 2 gages on each side?

I just returned from the boneyard and there are several 88's-95's. More early 90's but a few 95's.

The tachometers do not have a redline just 6,000 RPM maximum.

If you want I can pull an entire cluster(more expensive)or just the tachometer.

Reply to this post and tell me which way you want to go.

Brian, the person I always work with is very fair as you may have noticed on one of my threads/posts only charged me $10 for my Tachometer.

Take Care

The 87 to 91 clusters are a plug and play swap(BUT NOT DIESEL, tach will not read properly). Doesn't matter if its a I6 or V8 as the vehicle's wire harness tells the tach which engine it has(unless someone did a engine swap, but that's a simple issue to resolve)

The speedo meters will not swap between the tach and non tach clusters, they are different mounting size inside the cluster.

I'm using a 87 tach cluster in my 89, with no issues.

92 to 96 PSOM clusters will not plug in the wire harness of the older trucks, they also will not mount in the dash without mods to the dash. I know as If I will install a E4OD in my 89, I will have to use a PSOM speedo cluster. The E4OD tranny I got doesn't have the speedo gear machined into the tranny's tail shaft to run the mechanical speedo of the 87 to 91 trucks.

Hello again.

What year range instrument cluster and /or tachometer will plug in to his truck? What is PSOM?

Maybe we can help stydell311 get the gage he wants.

Thanks again!

Boon

P.S. I know that you stated 87-91 but I just want to be certain before I pull any parts.

I have the one with the speedo in the middle and the four other on the outsides, kind like this one, but older: I've had an aftermarket SunTune attached to the steering wheel column since I got it in 1992. The one I was wondering about is this one: . I just was wondering if I found one for cheap if I could make it look more factory.
