I have the same code reader, its a good piece of equipment. The extension cable is a waste of money, you can perform the WOT test by pulling the throttle open under the hood.
You're right. I way overstated it. Should have said "looks nice and convenient for an amateur like me to have the longer cable."
It's a luxury, & I deserve it (I think). Although in the 4 years I've used my #3145, I've yet to order the darn thing. With my attention span, I'd probably slam the hood down & sever the dang thing!

Any other opinions on whether the cable is a "must have" or a "nice to have?" Is it only useful on the WOT test? Because I seem to remember some tests that required stepping on the brake, turning the steering, etc.... (It was like rubbing your belly and patting your head at the same time, with an old flash-type scan tool I had.)

You hit all the high points! So to expound on your analogy, w/ the cable, you can sit comfy behind your steering wheel, while your rubbing your tummy, it will pat you on your head!!!
I used mine without the extension cable, but that does look handy. I may get that too.
I have the extension cable but only use it on my F53 so I do not have to stand on my head. I do not use it with the F & E series I have.
Even with the reader hooked up you can watch the MIL on the dash to know when to do the WOT, hit the Brake, turn the wheel and push the button.
I didn't see anything on reading codes with the diesel engine. Are you sure I can read codes on a '92 7.3L?
No you can not use the code reader on your truck as it has no plug for the Transmission Controller and you only have this Transmission Controller if you have a E4OD Transmission.

Thanks for the tip. I may save my $ for something else then.
