On the same topic I'm installing 5:13's in my truck as soon as it arrives in the mail. The gear calculator says I should go lower with 44's but the pinion gets too small and weak. 5:13's should work nice with my new 428 FE being built for this summer.
i was thinking about pinion size, but a v6 in sand can probably get away without any problems, plus he doesn't have the gear reduction of a t-case to compound the stress on the gears

Pinion size shouldn't be an issue for him. Even if he decides climb a curb at the mall parking lot....... The Ford axles have more vertical offset than Dana axles, which means bigger pinions. The 8.8 pinion is about twice the size as a Dana 44 of the same ratio. In a 5.13, it may even be bigger than a Dana 60 pinion.
