No but with a full tank it is the best way. It is the way do mine.
A few also cut a hole in the bed and put a patch over the hole.
You will also need the fuel line disconnect tools.

Don't see why not! I think diesel's a hair heavier than gas /gal., so more incentive to not drop the tanks if full.

Ok so I checked and the pump is dead....I went online an there seems to be several options for fuel pumps....How can I tell which pump is inside my rear tank? Besides the obvious taking it out...I would like to order it before I start taking the tank down...I'ts my only transportation...

If I were to guess I would say you have a 19 Gal metal tank.

ok here's a question: If the rear tank/pump is bad, can you disconnect it and continue to drive on the front tank? Or is it a deal that you want to have a back up vehicle when you drop the rear tank?

For the 1988 if the mechanical fuel reservoir/selector valve is working right then you should be able to drive it with one tank gone. But I would bet it would leak some.

If you want to drive the truck and not replace the tank at all then go to a salvage yard and get a one tank fuel reservoir off a 1986-1989 Bronco, one tank F-series or Bronco II.

Then swap it out with your mechanical fuel reservoir/selector valve then it is just plug and play.

Removing the bed is an easy way to change pumps. 6 bolts, the only stinker being the middle bolt on the left side. kinda shrouded by the middle tank and with the fuel lines and wiring right there, difficult to use heat on the nut. Remove the bumper, spare, receiver hitch if any, unplug the rear harness and lift it off.

Thanks subford! I am planning on replacing rather than just removing my rear tank.
