Ok, so im trying to trouble shoot the fuel pumps and I'm a bit lost.
Truck only runs on the front gas tank when I switch over to the rear tank engine dies immediately. So, i will flip the switch to the front turn the ignition without starting the engine, I can hear the fuel pump cycle. If i do the same for the rear tank I don't hear the fuel pump cycle....
Ok, I looked at the price of a fuel pump and the work that is needed to install it, and I was wondering of any other steps I can take to trouble shoot the pump before I spend money on it. any ideas

What year? applying voltage directly to pump is about it.
The wires off the pump. I think your pump is pooched though. Sometimes you can smack the underside of the tank in question, in the vicinity of where the pomp is, & they'll come back to life for a short time, but if it does, think of it as a final encore or death rattle! It will fail again soon!
It could only be the dash switch, the wiring and plugs from the dash switch to the pump or the pump its self.
It would be the Brown wire with a White stripe.

As in switching the actuating wires to the pumps could ID a bad switch?

Need help here, So can take the brown with white stripe wire and give a 12v source to see if its the switch...?
If you put power on the brown with white stripe wire at the plug on the frame drivers side near the front of the rear fuel tank going to the tank and ground the Orange wire in the same plug and the pump runs it is very likely a bad switch.
If it does not run then bad pump.
By the way the wire colors on the other side of the plug going to the tank are Pink with a black stripe for the hot pump wire and Black for the ground wire.
The fuel pump is grounded at the drivers side on radiator support.

wondering if its easier going to the junk yard picking a switch up and trying it that way. Just not really sure about giving juice to anything don't want to burn out anything... Or is it just a simple thing to do.....
Not easy either way, you would have to cut into the hot pump wire on either side of the plug at the tank so that way you would have a ground and the other way you have to pull the dash apart to get to the switch.
Your choice and it is one that I will have to do soon as my front tank just quit the same way.

Tell me about it and I have a full tank of gas in the rear tank......
