so i have a 78 4x4 ranger xlt w 400. lots of new parts... was running wonderful until i left work today. ran for a sec then quit. when i went to restart, there was a backfire that rivals my 357! scared the crap out of me. it wont start. turns over and eventually backfires (loud) again. my wifes 8.5 months preggo and i need to get this mother back on the streets! thanks for your time
its a bronco ranger xlt... sorry. i thought it was the timing chain but didnt know for sure. does this mean i need to replace the chain? i was gonna go gear drive. is it possible i messed other things up? thats the last thing that needs to be replaced. everything else is new.... this is a big bummer.
thanks for the input i really appreciate it.
pull the number one plug out unplug the coil so there is no spark and bump the motor over till you get it on compression on #1 then pull the distributer cap off it should line up with #1 if it dosn't then there is a problem ..if it lines up it may be a carbon track causing the missfire..let us know what you find out..
OK, I see the smart-*** fairy has visited the forum again. (If you don't recognize the trim package designations on a particular year Bronco, don't belittle someone who does or worse HAS one you don't know about... Ford didn't even MAKE the Ranger model in 78 so it wouldn't be anything BUT a trim level).
On to the issue at hand... Ditto to what kenjh has already said. Some of us are more interested in helping than cracking wise at the expense of new-comers.
