electric fan conversion ?
theres a difference in how the two engines make power. but not in how power can be sucked off from inefficient parts. it still takes the same amount of power to turn the alternator, A/C, powersteerin, water pump, and fan regardless of what type of engine its on.
I have to agree with this guy. All those accesories have X amount of resistance and require X amount of force to overcome that resistance.
well assuming all of the accesories that its driving are the same as the V10, then it stands to reason that it will use the same amount of hp. Now since the 3 cyl geo metro only has a very small amount of power to work with, you will sooner notice the power loss. On the V10, well frankly you wont notice a damn thing lol. BUT that has alot more power to work with.
honestly, I dont think it will make any noticeable difference.
I think some of the newer trucks have electro-viscous fan clutches. Its a fan clutch that can be turned on on demand. I know the new ford rangers and explorers with 4.0 have them too. They screw on too! Maybe, if they do screw right on to the water pump of the IDI somebody could figure out how they are controlled and mod one of them into their truck. It would be like having an air clutch like in the big trucks. I think the ultimate fan clutch is the horton air clutch. That would be sweet to put one of those on an IDI. Maybe some international truck applications have an air clutch and that could be used. Then you would need an air compressor. Oops, im already over the 400 dollar ford fan clutch price.
problem with the manual fan ain't the power it draws while its on, its the constant slight drag when its not, electric fan mod on my jeep was the single biggest economy gain while I owned that rig, I gained from 18.2mpg freeway keeping as close to 63 as traffic allows to 19.4, of course the only times that fan ever came on was out in the rocks or idling at a stoplight, even with a trailer behind that weighed more than the jeep.
the other advantage is a fast warmup, which does save some wear and tear on other parts, not sure how much that will effect the diesels

well its like this really;
you can be one of those guys who says: well thats not going to make much of a difference, and neither is this, and that.
or you can be the guy who says and does all the little mods combined, and yup, make a difference.
the IDI is a low hp engine.freeing up HP or mods that add HP,combined will provide more HP at the wheels.its that simple.
sure, nothings like adding a turbo.but how about ditching the soup bowl, installing ram air or cowl induction, larger exhaust, etc.
sure all those things by themselfs are nothing impressive(a good exhaust however,is one of the larger mods you can feel all at once)but combine them and you have a diesel more powerful than what you started with.
iv never had mine come on.so i dunno how much of a difference it makes,my guess is,you would would feel the power lose.but like peruses says anyway, the thing is always spinning.
again.sure, you can be one of those guys who says yeah but its not enough to worry about.
i remember a thread where David85 ditched his( i think he does every winter actually) and reported a MPG increase.thats results enough for me........when i finally get to this mod lol.

And the best part is, if you hit a tree, a plastic non moving electric fan wont rip a hole in the rad like a freewheeling metal one will......
lmao yeah.
actually, a little more common than that one haha,is you no longer have the risk of a clutch coming undone and killing the rad either.iv read that happen to a few here.
no,thats not reason enough to do it or anything.just pointing out another positive though.
