99 explorer Noise

I have a 99 Explorer 4.0 OHV sport with a 126,000 miles on it. I have the noise of a diesel or marbles on acceleration I have read that this is common in some of these engines. However this last week a rattle at idle has developed, its not there if the rpms are up but only when they drop down to 600 or so. It's hard to place the noise and it's loudest beside the vehicle but I am thinking timing chain. I believe there is only one timing chain in this engine right? I am wondering if the chain tensioner on this engine is oil pressure affected? At what mileage does the chain go on these engines?

Thanks for the help

Your engine has 2 chains, one is on the front of the engine and the other is in the rear and the rear one requires an engine R&R to change.

Are you sure you have the OHV engine and not the SOHC? The SOHC is the one that has timing chain/guide issues.

Well the VIN says its a OHV, is there anything to tell the engines apart by looking at them?

The timing chains go in all engines (I have replaced enough of them) I am just having a hard time figuring out where the sound is coming from on this engine. It rattles at low RPM and if I rev it, it will rattle as the RPM's are coming down. Sounds like timing chain but the sound seems to be everywhere

Have you checked the catalytic converter heat shields for broken welds, or other exhaust heat shields for looseness? The way you describe the noise also would be consistent with a heat shield rattle, and since it would be under the vehicle and bouncing off walls/concrete, would make it difficult to determine "front or rear" of the engine.

If you have the "X" (OHV) engine, they are relatively bullet proof, have never seen one lose a chain.... the OHC engine is another story, they can be identified by a larger valve cover as the cam is on top of the head.

Rattles sounding like marbles can be piston slap or carbon inside the combustion chamber.
