EGR code 94 aerostar

I am getting a 33 code after the check engine light came on. I have looked through the forums but haven't found a good description of where the egr is located on my engine. I got this code with the key on but the engine off.
It flashed 33 twice the a 6 second space and a single flash then multiple flashes too quick to read. So I am assuming that the 33 codes are the ones that I am looking for. Now to find the egr.

Thanks

The 33 code is invalide (or you were reading the cylinder count (for 6 cylinders). For your year ('94) it should be a three digit code.

What are you using to pull codes?

If you are using a scanner, plug it in, sit in the drivers seat and turn on the * without starting it. The CE light wil flicker and you will hear a bunch of noises (relays). Then it will give you your engine size, then it will count out the code numbers using morse code. (example: ... .... ... = 343)

Here are some easy to follow instructions (you might have to hit the "What does it mean" on the bottom left corner again to see the instructions)

Code

On the weekend I took some time a hooked up a volt meter to get the codes and came up with 173 which is o2 sensor. Now does that mean it needs to be replaced or is that just the result of something else wrong?

173 - Oxygen sensor not switching - system is or was rich - Single Right or Rear HO2S

That sounds like you need to replace the O2. Not too tuff to do, and you should see an increase in gas millage. I would do it soon before burning up your cats.

Oxygen sensors die a very slow, lingering death rather than a quick failure like most sensors. At some point, lack of sufficient signal strength triggers the CE light. The engine will continue to run but the fine tuning input the O2 sensor supplies is lacking, especially after warm up, and you begin to notice driveablility problems such as what you describe. These will continue to worsen along with the mileage. Since everything happens in slow motion, it is hard to ascertain the problem until the O2 sensor fails completely. O2 sensors rarely last beyond 100,000 miles so judge yours accordingly.

(on edit: Dang it, 93nighthawk beat me to the post. What I get for being so verbose.)

Well I changed the O2 sensor and took it for a run, everything was fine for about a day and now the same code 173 is back. Any ideas?

Any chance that some of the sensor anti seize compound got onto the O2 sensor element, will kill a new O2 in hours. If so, can Not be cleaned, replace with new only.
Did you use a direct plug in replacement O2 sensor or a univeral wire in type?
May be an intermittent broken wire in the O2 sensor circuit or corroded socket connectors in O2 socket where you plugged in the new O2 sensor. If too heavy corroded replace with new socket. Spray with a good electrical contact cleaner, then put in some dielectric silicone grease which will longterm seal out water/moisture/road salt/debris and prevent corrosion. Ohm meter out the plug socket connection while wiggling for any intermittents.
If not in plug/socket then may be in wiring loom cable back to the Engine Control Unit.

Leak

IF there was a head gasket leak would tha cause a o2 sensor fault reading?
Could that anti freeze cause this. My coolant doesn't seem to be going down, I have been watching it for a week now. But I found some silicone sealant floating in the rad.

<!--StartFragment -->Ethelene gycol Antifreeze coolant will kill an O2 sensor quickly. The silica content coats the O2.
See> http://www.oxygensensors.com/diagnose.jpg

I've heard but not confirmed that the new polypropeline gycol antifreeze "environmentally safe" has no silica and will not contaminate O2 sensors in a coolant exhaust leak

The silicone seal in the rad is probably from the water pump, recent replacement?
