I have a 2000 Eddie Bauer Expedition, 5.4l. The battery seems to go dead periodically, it will be good for serveral weeks and then it will be dead each morning for a few days.
I have looked at all the obvious possible power drains but have found nothing. Today the battery light came on and the voltage climbed, I turned on all the accessories and limped home. If I kept the rpm's below 1500 the voltage remained safe. When I got home I disconnected the battery and hooked up a VOM to test the current draw. There was a +4 amps draw on the battery, I then started removing fuses to find the problem. The problem seems to be the alternator field fuse. With this fuse unplugged the draw was 250ma.
I replaced the regulator on the alternator(didn't want to replace the alt due to it's only 6 months old and price, don't have the receipt) but the alt still draws 4 amps.
I assume the problem is the diodes in the alt and not some other problem like ignition switch or something else.
Well I replaced the alternator and the draw on the battery seems to be gone. I tested the alt that I took off and the diodes appear fine. Does anyone know what else in the alt could be drawing power?
