I have an '04 Excursion and might need to replace brakes soon. It's my understanding that in '05 the F-250s and 350s went to a slightly larger front rotor (caliper, too?). Since my Excursion needs all the stopping help it can get I'd like to know what parts I would need (besides the rotors, obviously) to perform this upgrade. I posted this on Pirate, too, and the only response I got was that I might have to change knuckles. Anyone know for sure what I need? All Excursions have a Dana 50 front axle and I know that the newer SuperDuties have the Dana 60. I also know I'd need 17" wheels to clear the bigger brakes.
It will change your offset as well, so the front tires will not stick out as far. The stock brakes are really very good, just be sure you keep fresh brake fluid in it and maybe upgrade to some braided brake lines.
When I bought my 04 KR it had 35k and I noticed a bit of pulse when I applied brakes. I've never had much luck on having rotors turned, because they always seem to warp again, so I decided to do a little research and found that buying or getting them slotted and drilled was very smart. It really helps dissapates the heat which helps reduce warpage and heat stress cracking. I also learned that the slots and holes allows the metal room to expand and contract w/o warping.
Also the slots move the dust away from the brake pads helping extend there life as well as giving better braking.
I also learned that the size of the discs on these are not large enough for these heavy trucks, at least not prior to 05.
I don't know for sure if all this is true, but w/ 30k on them and not any problems, I'm happy.
Getting larger front rotors may help, but it's pretty expensive versus drilled and slotted. I spent $350 w/ premium pads for all 4
There are upgrades to the stock config. Rotors will be debated, but there are some better then OE options out there. Then SSBC has some fancy calipers, I think they are 6 or possibly 8 piston. Braided lines would be a plus, as well as a high performance dot 3/4 flush every year.
I haven't looked in a while, but neither BAER nor Brembo had big brake upgrade kits for the 4wd.
