ok. i know ive asked this before, but i am finally drivin my 93 explorer as a DD again. with my first paycheck, the cat and stock muffler, as well as most of the stock exhaust, are goin bye-bye. also goin to invest in a new O2 sensor, seeins as it has 224,000 miles. does anyone know of a cold air, or free flow intake kit for em? and is there anything else, relatively inexpensive, that i can do for more mileage? (power is always a welcomed bonus.)
dont waste your money on aftermarket air cleaners, throttle plates, or exhaust systems. You dont get much and certainly will not pay for itself. Best thing to do is keep your foot out of it, and constant 58 MPH. Fuel filter and plugs are always a good idea.
you guys are breakin my heart... lol. well, im kinda goin off the fact that it used to get almost 17... and one time on the interstate, weather was bad, so i was only goin between 60 and 65 and got 21 out of it... dunno how, and ive never had a repeat performance. i just know its capable of better than my current 14/15 average... i mean, you dont think a more open intake, or takin the plugged up original cat off would help at least a mpg or two? i really wanna know cause im about to start drivin it about 120 miles a day, and every little bit counts...
think that O2 sensor has somethin to do with that? somebody on here told me that usually goes out between 50 and 60k and can wreck your mileage... if i remember right anyways...
thats true alright. o2 sensors should be replaced every 60,000 miles or so, IMO no matter what. The problem with changing the exhaust is that you spend all that money up front (exhausts for the 4.0 are expensive) but you dont recoup the costs that it saves you in MPG
well, i was just gonna use some strait pipe and a glass pack. cut it off just before the cat and use 3" pipe right along the frame and kick it out just in front of the passenger rear tire. $50 or 60 tops...
My wife's 96 Limited, 5.0 (still a 302 in my mind) AWD had 211,XXX on it when we bought it last fall; now has 226,XXX and has routinely yielded mileage varying from 16.X for commuting/around town driving to 20.X for cross country highway/interstate driving. This is about the same as my 1st vehicle: 1968 Galaxie 500 2 door coupe, 302/3 speed on the column. I do miss that car sometimes...
Parenthetically, this is TRUE mileage, as determined by a contemporaneous log of EVERY gallon/liter at EVERY refueling since the vehicle came into our possession; a practice I have maintained for each and every vehicle I have owned since the mid 1970s.
460/5: If you managed 21 MPG at "only" 60-65, at what speed do you normally drive?... Tail wind vs. head wind can yield very significant variance in mileage; probably a total swing of 15-20% or more, depending on speed/velocity.
Do keep in mind that as our aerospace engineer son observes about these vehicles: They have the aerodynamics of a brick; and as speed increases so does the drag coefficient.
donnor, i usually drive between 65 and 70. the "only 60 to 65" statement was on the interstate, where i usually drive between 75 and 80. it is also the interstate, where ive always clocked my best mileages of what the car gets, despite, its, as you said, brick-like aerodynamics. 95% of my drivin is highway miles. when i was in high school, i drove 24 miles a day, round trip to school. on the way to school, i had to stop at two stop signs (and livin where i lived, i rarely stopped at them) and they were less than a half a mile from my house, and the return trip had only one. so not much stoppin and goin, and the commute im gonna start makin, is very similar, only longer distances. i might add that it is very flat out here... lol. in short, ive personally put the last over 70,000 miles on the car, and its just not gettin what it used to get.
one thing i forgot to mention. my mom had the stock exhaust replaced about 6 years ago. think the cat meltin down might be where im seein my loss?
