Varies by year but most 87 to 96 models are rated at 210 hp with 315 to 325 lb-ft torque. Gas mileage is going to depend on gearing, 2wd or 4wd and model. I get 9-11 city and 15-16 highway with my 1993 F-150 extended cab 4x4.
With 3.55 gears and something close to stock sized tires the 5.8 will do 11-13mpg city and 14-16mpg hwy depending upon the transmission and the speeds involved.
I am 100% sure there is no fuel transfer issue. This truck is a tank. Full tune up, free flow exhaust, tires are properly inflated, no extra weight in the bed. No other accessories are installed to kill the little aero I do have. One of these days I need to put it on a scale to see how heavy it really is.
I have done numerous gas mileage checks running different speeds to see what the effects are. So far running 60 MPH in 4th yields the best of 12 MPG. That was measured over a 250 mile trip. Next time I'll try 3rd to see what happens. You should have seen it before I fixed all the sins from the previous owners and stock exhaust.
Right around 1600 RPM. I verified the speedometer was reading correct by timing it with the mile markers on the freeway. I've checked and checked again. The speed/odometer are dead nuts accurate.
Yeah that sounds about right for those gears and 235/75-16(30") tires. So there has to be something else wrong... because that is worse than what a lot of guys are getting with the 460.. which ain't right at all! I couldn't get less than 13mpg with the 5.8 in my (5000lb)truck.. and that's with me driving it like I stole it.
I agree the MPGs are low, but it is an improvement from when I started. I have replaced yards of vacuum hoses, checked timing (bumped it to 12), replaced items causing error codes (EGR,EVP,EVR) new O2 sensor, new exhaust, etc. The truck runs great, no error codes. Overall I am satisfied with the performance for a truck with 152k miles. No smoke, a small oil leak but otherwise very reliable. I need to start bumping the timing up to see what happens. Come to think of it the idle vacuum is on the low side, so maybe the balancer has slipped a little? Which leads me to doing a compression test...
