My method is to take them small stuff and see how they do. I do as much as I can myself but every so often I get something that requires tools I don't have and don't want to spend the money on. If they give me a good impression then I'll keep them in mind for when I get in over my head. Good luck.
Maybe take the truck in for a fuel filter and see if they get it done efficiently and for a good price or if they bitch and moan and try to pile all sorts of other junk onto the bill.
