Mountaineer Vibration
1999 Mountaineer AWD vibration, felt at 48-54 MPH under load OR decelerating.
No steering wheel vibration
No brake vibration.
Tires balanced.
No vibration when wheeels & engine at same speed.
Vibration continues at 48-54 even when coasting.
Drive shafts appear tight (no movement).
I found several answers here, but not exactly how mine is acting.
Can any of you Gurus give me clue?
Thx in advance Pards
Since it is part of the routine maintenance anyway, I would start by changing the center differential/VCU fluid with fresh. Take the vehicle for a decently long spin and see if the vibration changes at all. If not, then drain and refill the rear differential. Make sure if you have a limited slip rear differential that you use the appropriate fluid and friction modifier.
I should add that you might want to check the rear parking brake before draining and refilling the rear differential. If you find that the axle seals are leaking this would be a good time to replace the seals and bearings, especially since the bearings could be contributing to the vibration. To release the axles to replace the bearings and seals you will need to have the rear diff cover off anyway.
