Well........ I am biased, but for solid axle, and mechanics, I would go for the early model. 66-77, but that is just me.
The 78-79 is also a good bet given your criteria.
I to like the 66-77 bronco the best. There a bit smaller, have lots of parts available and easy to upgrade. Its hard to find em cheap but if you do jump on it. Its hard to find them in my area for less then 4-5 k and thats nothing pretty.

Yes, I would say that a fullsize should pull that with no problem if you go with a 351W at the very least. It is important to note that the shorter the wheelbase of the veihicle, the more likely it is to "sway" when towing a substantial load. The Bronco falls into the "intermediate" category when it comes to wheelbase. It might be good for it, but a full size truck would be "better".

I have a 83' 24 footer, built before the ultra lights became popular and the dry weight is about 6900 pounds. I used my 83 Bronco (460) and it was a little scary while just taking the trailer up to the tire shop about 5 miles away, I would not want to travel at highway speeds with the Broncos short wheel base.

I have a 86' 351 v8 bronco fullsize, although i dont pull a trailer with it it is a solid rig and would more than capable of pulling a trailer. 86' fullsize would possibly be a good way to go
