Vent line smoking?

Hi, evry1.
I just bought a 03 Excursion with a 7.3.
The first day while driving it for 30 miles or so. I was parked, and the engine was running. I was walking behind the truck and noticed that there was smoke coming from the rear drivers side. I looked and it was coming from what looks like a rubber vent line. Is this normal??
thanks !

What was the vent line attached to? If it is to the rear axle and hanging down that would be the rear axle vent and it should not have steam coming out of it and it shouldn't be hanging either.
You need to define where the hose is from, If it's the axle you need to drain the differential and install new fluid as the evidence, steam, indicates water is in the dif., water in the dif will cause all kinds of problems so change the gear lube now.

My guess is PO has done CCV mod.

You didn't say what size the vent line is, but if it's 3/4" heater hose type, I'll bet I'm right.....

Roger that, I didn't even consider the rear heater hoses.

I think you misunderstand. It's not a standard item. There aren't any heater hoses like this in the rear of the Ex.

If it's like Don has surmised, and this is indeed the CCV mod (which like Don has suggested, and both Nick and I agree on) the heater hose in question is routed from the dog house on the drivers side valve cover of the 7.3L, over the brake master cylinder, down the engine compartment to the underside of the vehicle, and out back towards the rear of the Ex. Some guys who do this mod stop about halfway back (that's how I have it on my F250) and some guys will take it all the way to the rear axle.

With this mod, you will have oil vapor (smoke) venting to the atmosphere instead of being routed back to the engine, where it coats the connecting boots, pipes, inside of the turbo assembly, and the intercooler, making a mess.

It also keeps the engine compartment from becoming (over time) coated with oily dirt.

Here's a picture tutorial Chris put up when he did the mod (and the added catch can he decided to fab up) on his truck.

Thanks,, sounds like that is what it is. I have not traced it out yet, but it was more an oil vapor then smoke.
The rubber hose was about 1" in diameter and come down behind the driver side rear wheel.
I will check it out tomorrow.
Peace

I traced out the vent line today, and yes it is a CCV coming from the valve cover.
Thanks

Make sure there are no dips or "valleys" in the hose. That will allow oil to accumulate and possibly eventually cause excessive pressure with can damage seals.
