Can't find second gear!

Hi Everyone,

My 1965 F100 with the 240 6 and a 3 speed trans is ALMOST DONE! I finally finished up the last of the new brake lines and did the rear trans seal and U-Joints. I took her out for the first ride and have a bear of a time finding second gear.

It was a column shift, the previous owner put a Hurst 3 speed shifter on the floor. I can get first fine, but after that I have a tough time with second. When I get second it goes right in so I do not think the trans is the issue. Also, when I try to go from first to third, same issue - very hard to find. There is a lot of play in the shifter, but it seems to work ok.

Is there a set way to adjust this type of shifter or is it just trial and error?

THANKS EVERYONE!

Rob

i am assuming you are talking about the Hurst shifter. by the sounds o it maybe a good cleaning and fresh lube. it's not sliding to the right properly. at least that is the first thing i'd do. if you have to force it kinda it may be a pressure plate problem in that your clutch may not be disingaugeing enuf to give freedom to slide into gear. depending on how long the shifter has been in there my bet is dry lube. maybe lay on the floor under it and have someone else try and shift it from 1st to second a coupla times and watch what it's doin. I believe there's a hole in each of the shift arms and on the bottom of the shifter body that you use for aligning the shifter.
First take the linkage rods loose at the shifter end, then take a pin(about an 1/8" drill bit), line up the holes in the shifter arms with the hole in the shifter body, insert the pin through the whole thing. This should lock the shifter in the neutral position. Then adjust the length of the linkage rods from the shifter to the trans so they'll go back into the shifter arms without binding the locking pin(make sure the tranny is in neutral too!). Remove the locking pin and you're done.
If the shifter is indeed worn out, Hurst offers a rebuild program that might be cheaper than a new one.

Have you tried opening up the transmission and seeing if second gear is in there? Its gotta be in there somewhere. Just kidding, I couldn't resist throwing that in. Seriously I hope you solve your problem soon. Keep us posted.
