i have a 70 f100 with a 4 speed stick, it has a Hurst Competition shifter in it and it keeps getting stuck in second gear. when it does this i have to climb under it and manually place the shifter back in neutral. once i do this it will sometimes go for awhile before it does it again. i have disassembled the shifter to look for wear and found none. any ideas as to why this is happening. i found a site that tells how to align the shifter linkage by putting a pin thorough the holes on the shifter and Ive already done that, all the gears seem to engage correctly when i have someone shift while im looking underneath. thanks for any help.
I assume your rig has a Toploader or a T-10 4-speed. It could be just binding. Did you lube the washers and springs? How about check for worn or bent shift levers. If none of that helps then it likely something internal.
Given the cost of World Class T-5z trannies has come down, consider going to a 5-speed. Jegs' street price is $1300 less a bellhousing, clutch system, and adapter. Toploaders bring a decent price used - even if it needs a rebuild. Other sources include Ford Powertrain Applications, Modern Driveline, and Keisler Transmissions. I'm planning to go with a TKO-500 on my 70 FE.
yeah its a top-loader, but i got the problem solved i replaced the bushings, straightened a rod and one of the levers was hitting another one so i shaved some off for clearance. man now its shifting like a bolt action rifle...
yeah i got the white flareside a few weeks ago...loving it, just having to make some adjustments here and there. do you happen to know how to get the dash off, im looking for the mounting bolts.
Tweaking and adjusting is typical of any new-to-you vehicle.
Do you mean the instrument panel or the dash pad? The panel is secured with screws.. I think about eight of 'em. The dashpad is secured with nuts and washers.... you'll see'em when you remove the instrument panel.
It's easier if you do... disconnect the speedometer cable and you should have enough room to tilt it forward for much better access. Otherwise, you'll be twisted like a pretzel on your back with your arm stuck up the backside of the dash trying to find the dang studs... call it a learning experience.
