Ii have a 2001 ranger ext cab 2wd. 3.0 with 4 speed trans. This winter when it was real cold it would not shift properly from 1st to second the first time it was run in the morning. After that it was fine. It would just wind out to about 3000 rpm and then shift hard. Now it has begun to do it all the time. It will shift at 3000 or so all the time if I let it. I can pull it into 2 manually with the shifter and then shift it back to 3. The OD/OFF led will come on and flash if I let it shift on its own. No other gear has any problem. It just turned 36,000 miles - no warrenty left. Bummer. Any ideas. Sounds like a sensor to me.
Auto-zone will read your check engine codes for free, might be the throttle possition sensor.my 95 acted like you described, replaced the TPS and all is well.I got code PO222....P.S....the check engine light doesnt have to be on to get PENDING codes.
Could be the vehicle speed sensor, speedometer gear, or the 1-2 accumulator is stuck. I would start with a good flush of the fluid, and change the fluid and filter. Run a can of Sea Foam in it for a few days, then do the fluid change. What does the fluid look like now? Is it pink or brown? Does it smell burnt? My guess is a good cleaning will solve the problem, but you should pull the codes to see if something is "pending". Good luck.
My 99' did something similar, the shifting problem from 1st to 2nd, the od light flashing, and I had the abs light on as well, I could manauly shift my auto and it worked ok, but if not the real hard shifts at higher rpms - it was the vss sensor (vehicle speed sensor I think), autozone read the code for free, the sensor was only like about $15 bucks I think, it was pretty cheap and very easy to get to and replace.
