So, the 86 B2 with 4 speed auto just gave out a couple weeks ago.
Was pulling onto the highway, getting up to speed, and it went to shift into 3rd and suddenly no forward motion and a slight grind sound! Now in the drive way I get no activation of any gear! ?No R, OD, D, 1, 2. Just nothing! I've heard the input shafts on these things can break or something, possibly?
How hard/is it worth it to drop an A4LD and swap for a salvage yard one. Or is a Manual swap possible in a weekend? I don't have much of a budget, perhaps 500-700 to put into it. Otherwise I'll just get rid of it as a parts rig.
Sounds like the OD unit trashed itself, had that happen to my B2. As you have a 86 A4ld tranny, it will have the single solenoid control for the torque converter lockup. In 87,88 it went to the dual solenoid setup, that means the ECU now also controls the 3-4 shifting.
You can put in a A4ld from a Explorer upto 94, but you will have to figure the way to operate that 3-4 solenoid. There are a few threads about this on here.
So the OD thrashing itself to pieces will kill all motion too? I'm just getting used to the quirks of these things. I'm well acquainted to the wonderful E4OD of the F-series trucks and now this happened. Are they really worth rebuiliding or just get a different one?
The OD unit trashing apart is one thing that can happen, I also heard/seen the torque converter hub(inside it) strip out, as long as the input shaft is ok, probly a new TQ will fix that. If you heard grinding noises in the tranny, its probly not the TC at this point.
You can rebuild the A4ld into a better tranny, the Explorer A4ld for the 4.0L engine is little better built than the 2.8/2.9 tranny for a starting point. Over on the Ford Explorer fourm, someone build up a "near bullet proof A4ld" using various parts.
