It does not necessarily have to illuminate the CEL for there to be a code in there. Run a code scan and see what comes up. If u have a bad coil pack u should have a misfire code for that cylinder.
i have noticed when the coils go out its not the coil. its the rubber boot letting it arc to the cylinder. save a few bucks and try the boot first. 4 out of the 5 i have seen its been the boot.
If going to the trouble of pulling the COPs, why not just replace them? I picked up 8 new units on ebay for 115 a number of months ago. I've already put on 20K on them with no issues. I think the seller was Global Automotive or something like that.
To the OP.....if its missing at idle, you can start unplugging the coils with it running until you find the one that is bad. I agree about replacing all 8 coils as well. Global Automotive has a set of 8 for about $90 on ebay. I wqould replace the plugs at that time as well
Two years ago when I replaced one, they didn't cost $90 to $100 a set. They were $60 each. Plus, that was two years ago and just now am I needing to replace another.
I am not changing all 8 if I can determine exactly which one giving the misfire.
coil packs are like u joints> better to replace all at once. But feel free to do as you like. it is your truck after all.
I don't understand your logic on this. Why would your replace 7 good coils just because the 8th one failed. Are you going to replace all 8 of yours every time one of them fails?
