i was told i needed to replace upper and lower ball joints, the quote was 645.00. Is that too high, and what figure would be in the ballpark for this repair. I went to Firestone, I know, but I don't have a mechanic, I really don't have many problems with my truck, so no steady mechanic that works on it all the time. I have a 01 Ranger, can someone give me some advice?
I just replaced my ball joints today. The parts cost me $250 at Auto Zone for new upper control arms/ball joints and the lower ball joints. I spent about 6 hours doing it. The mechanics price sounds reasonable if it includes new upper control arms and a front end alignment.
If you want to find mechanics in your area use this link and enter your zip code. I would want a second opinion as some of the big retailers have a tendency to push work that isn't needed. You could also check online for your local Better Business Bureau website for information on mechanics in your area and their track record. If the ball joints are replaced make sure the new ones have grease fitings. The old ones don't and that is why they fail in the first place.
look at the upper BJ and if it has a snapring around it then it absolutely can be easily replaced. I also agree with pawpaw and a few other threads where people have knocked out the original upper BJ and replaced it. If you change the upper control arm you must get an alignment immediately . it actually is not all that tough of a job to do if you have any skills!. I changed my upper control arm, new wheel bearings, rotor and pads in about 2 hours a side

Does not sound to bad. You want to find out what brand parts he was using and if he was replacing the upper arms and was he doing an alignment
you can then go to rockauto.com and get a quote on the parts and find out what the labor price actually is........
