Help... Can't Find Right Cam Sync. Alignment Tool.
I have looked everywhere including searching for my aplication (2000 Ranger 4.0) for the right cam sync tool and I cannot for the life of me find one to fit. All I see are up to 98 for the Ranger 4.0. and then my year with the 3.0. The closest I found is the OTC 6483 for 99-02 for explorer and 99-04 mountaineer with pushrod 4.0. (didn't know they came that new with 4.0ohv) OTC6483 Ford Camshaft Synchronizer Tool OTC 6483 OTC Automotive Mechanics Tools
Is that one I can use?
My problem is for some reason Ford used a 2 pin sensor that uses a variable reluctance pick up not the standard Hall effect pick up for about 2 years on the 4.0 rangers. like 99 and 2000. So mine has that and I can't get it ligned up without the tool. Tried the voltage thing and that did not work. I keep throwing a p1309 code.
My 2001 Emissions control Manual suggests that the PCM might need to be replaced.
That would suck, can you explain? Are you getting that from the code I am throwing? I just assumed that it meant the cmp was misaligned, which comes up as one of the possibilities for the code.
DTC P1309 indicates Misfire Detection Monitor is not enabled.
so do the following:
Disconnect the PCM
Connect a digital multimeter
Measure voltage between CMP and PWR GND circuits at the PCM harness connector
Bump engine in short burst with the starter withou starting engine for at least 10 engine revolutions
Does the meter reading swithc between low (less than 2.0 volts DC) and high (greater thatn 8.0 volts DC)?
If yes:
Verify that the CMP is installed correctly. If it is installed correctly replace PCM.
If no:
Replace CMP sensor.
The above technical information is from the 2001 Emission Control Manual.
That first picture of the positioner looks just like this one with the proper description. Cam Synchronizer Explorer,RANGER, Mountaineer 1999-2002 4.0L 303-638
My 2000 shop manual shows the correct number of 303-638. I have the 303-630 that I got off E-Bay and it is marked 3.8L / 5.0L. Local Ford dealer was kind enough to let me borrow one over a week-end one time. Good luck, hate them kind of problems.

OK... so I cheated. I just looked at the internet picture of the alignment tool and adjusted my synchronizer to what it looked like and it has been 60 miles and no CEL. I might be good to go. How long does it usually take to trip the CEL with a misaligned CMP? The last few times it came on within 20 miles.
