Question U-Joint help

Working on a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport trying to change the U-joints and they are stuck in there. Theses particualr joints have a inner retainer ring. I have them soaking now in some penitrant oil. Has anyone ran into this issue before and any advice to get the caps out would be appreciated. Can post a pic if needed.

I use a broken Snap-On screwdriver to pry the clip out, the the rest is the same as always. A torch is pretty fast though.

Still have a problem. The yoke saddle end that fits into the coupling of the transmission. Will not take the new u-joint. I noticed that the new u-joints have a beveled heads where the cap slides on and the old ones did not. This adds just under a 3/16's of a inch in total distance.

Went and made sure that the front yoke u-joint was not any different than the others at 2 different part stores and they were the same.
Not sure what the heck is the problem. You can get one side or the other to take the retianer clip but not both.

The u-joints fit up just fine on the drive shaft section but not the coupling yoke.

I dont know if its bent in some or what. Really tempted to drop a quarter in there and weld some flat bar over it.

Are the u joints you are replacing the originals or has someone been in there before?
In the past I have run into cases where Ford used the same cross with two different diameter cups but never two different lengths on the cross. It sounds like you might have dropped one or more of the bearings into the bottom of the cap while fitting the caps. If so the grease in the cap might have covered it. Take a look, it's happened to me several times.

Sure enough, thats what I found this morning two pins had fell down in there. Got it back together now.

That one was a pain. Dont ever remember having this much trouble before with ujoints. The end caps would not recess enough on the yoke to let the heads hold the pins in place and looks like someone had dinged it inside the hole. so I filed that burr down and its in there now.

Glad you got it. That's the stuff that makes life exciting for us DIYers.
Happy motoring.
