Towing with a Explorer

I am looking for a 2006 – 2008 Explorer to use as a daily driver plus I will need to tow my utility trailer and also snowmobile trailer. The utility trailer I don’t feel will be an issue but would like opinions on the snowmobile trailer.

Trailer is an enclosed 14’ long x 8’ wide, weight is 1800#, 4000# loaded w/ three sleds and gear. I would tow this trailer 3 – 5 times a year 2 – 3 times being a trip ~300 miles one way the others ~100 one way.

I have the 4.6L V8 at the top of my list but the ones I am finding either have too many miles too much money or come with a 1.25” receiver, there is a 4.0L available with low miles and has the 2” receiver with a towing capacity of #4500 according to the dealer.

Is there a web site where I can put in a VIN and get the specs of the vehicle?

Looking for info on how the V6 and even the V8 would tow this trailer

Thanks for all info

Both would handle that trailer just fine. Just make sure you have trailer brakes and that you disable overdrive.

I have an 07 4.6 2in hitch I use for towing my 3 place enclosed and does a great job. I also have the Brake controller in my Explorer, However I do tow in overdrive most times.

With the frontal area of that enclosed trailer, I would try to hold out for a 4.6L - especially if you're also gonna be hauling lotsa people/gear inside. Also, I think the LS rear end was dropped starting in '06 when stability control was made standard. Ditto on the trailer brakes!!!

Not a web site but any Ford dealer can make a print out of the original equipment the vehicle was shipped with. All you need is the VIN.
Thanks for all info[/quote]

Okay, Just picked up a 2007 Explorer EB 4.6L V8 Class III/IV tow package, 2" receiver, #7300 max gross trailer weight.

Next step is to install a brake controller...

I may start a new post, did a search but got lost in all the different years.

I would like to install my self but may also get a quote from an accessories shop.

Any tips/tricks on installing one of these, Wiring? brands of controller to look for and look out for?

Thanks for all the great help so far.
