Hi everyone, I have been lurking FTE for a couple years now and have always found what I needed - Thank You! Thought I should introduce myself and finally ask a question that has me stumped. I'm on my third SuperDuty (05 F350CC V10, 99 F350CC 7.3, and just bought an 08 F350CC 6.4) and second diesel. I love the 08 I just got two weeks ago. Job 1 truck, and had to have the radiator replaced the first week! Luckily my dealer is good and they covered it. Anyway, back to my question. I did the two fuel filters tonight and ran across something I haven't seen addressed yet. On both filter housing caps, there are two recessed grooves for the o-ring. On the engine filter I set the new o-ring in the larger diameter top groove, just below, but touching the lip of the cap. My Motorcraft instructions said to run the cap down to 20 ft. lbs. I did, and there was no way the cap was closed. So I ran it down until I thought it felt seated. Sure enough, while I was purging the air, it sprayed fuel out from the o-ring area below the cap. Which groove do I use?! When I try the lower groove, it takes a heck of a lot more than 20 ft. lbs. to seat it! I have read a couple of posts dealing with changing the filters, but haven't seen anything about the o-ring problem I'm having. Sorry for the long thread, but I found a chance to intro myself and ask a question, so I did. Thanks!

It's the first groove following the end of the threads I believe. Take the cap off the oil filter next to it and compare to be sure.
Try takeing the cap off again and move the oring to the other groove. Use the old oring if you trashed the new one although I doubt you did.
here is a link to the powerstroke bible for the 6.4. you can download it and then learn about several of the components.
If you look at the pics you can clearly see the o-ring in the top groove. For what it is worth, you need to put it in the upper groove you described and use motor oil on the o-ring and then it should screw right down. Then torque.
Thanks Capt and Senix - I appreciate your help and wisdom. I did purchase OEM Motorcraft filter kit - always have with my superdutes, thanks to the research done here. My 08 now has 39K on it - so it is out of factory warranty, but I did buy the extended CNA warranty. It covered my radiator replacement already. One last question for you: Because I am out of factory warranty am I on my own when it comes to getting the updated reflashes? I have noticed lots of regens in only a couple hundred miles along with short 15 - 20 second bursts of white smoke. I'm guessing it is the CAC issue? Thanks again!
