Fuel cap ĻO'ringĻ blowout

This is the 4th time this has happen on my friendīs truck. It seems to have started after I used the programer with a 60hp setting. They must increase line pressure. I have replaced the fuel filter 4 times, mainly to get the oring which is not round. I AM installing it properly. What to do? Does anyone sell an aftermarket cap (IE not plastic) with a small groove/lip to help the oring from blowing out? The surface on the plastic one is flat, so a little groove would make it less likely to slip. Also how tight is the cap supposed to be, in ft/lbs? I think since I manufactured a tool to take off and put on this time I probably put about 50 lbs of torque. Hope it works. But I really want an aluminum or stainless cap which wont warp. Any ideas would be appreciated.

i am pretty sure the only aftermarket cap around is made by diesel innovations and is aluminum? Make sure you lube that o ring with a little diesel first. i always hand tightnen mine until i feel the cap bottom out with the filter housing and i've never had any trouble.

Just checked their website and did not find any fuel caps. Can you give me a link?

50 lb-ft of torque? That's way too much. Overtightening an o-ring can start to deform it to the point that is loses some of it's sealing ability. You can actually push it out of the sealing area. The last fuel filter I got had a tightening torque on it, and it stated specifically not to go over I believe it was between 12-18 lf-ft of torque. Even the bolts that hold the turbo down, which use o-rings to seal the oil, only get tightened down to 18 lb-ft.

Also, the only way to increase fuel pressure is to do it mechanically, either with FPR shims or to run an externally regulated setup, similar to what I've got. A chip or programmer will not increase fuel pressure.

I've set it at lower torques before, but It keeps blowing so I assume he has problems w/ a distorted cap. I would love to find an aluminum cap unless it will corode w/ the aluminum base, then stainless might work better. Now that you mention it harvey, I think he has shimed something in the fuel system. Will talk to him about that.

Anything over 60 PSI IMO is too much. It's a PLASTIC cap.

Goldman, I had a freind of mine give me his old fuel cap that he kept when he sold his truck. It is a combo lock cap that you can hide a key inside of. Before I put this on, I was leaking fuel from the old stock cap aswell. I am at work now, but check this thread later tonight or even tomorrow and I will give you the company name and I think I even have a phone number on the paper work.

Hotwheels,

We're talking about a fuel FILTER cap, not the fuel filler one. Different caps.

I thought for a second, "Hey! Great place to hid a spare key!" Then I realized, with the truck locked, I couldn't pull that little release handle. Hmmmmm.

Alas, a number of my bright ideas are like this....

You guys are funny. After purchasing 4 fuel filters, I think I would try to find a new or used plastic screw-on filter cap. I change my fuel filter with every 5k oil change. I use a pair of channel locks opened up, to remove and to put cap back on. I tighten the cap till my hand hurts from the high-tech channel lock tool (the secret I learned here at FTE). I have NEVER had a problem.

Good Luck

I too use the highly technical oversize channel lock filter cover tool but I only tighten/snug a little bit beyond as tight as I can get it by hand and have never had a problem.

WIC or NAPA has one that includes the cap as part of the filter, cheaper than stearleship (DUH), fifth one so far hasn't leaked yet, but I am getting that diesel smell in the A/C. MY original Ford one warped noticeably.

Have you checked the housing for cracks around the lip, and threads for any sort of damage? Over-tightening of the cap may possibly do damage to that aluminum housing. Just a thought.

This tool may help with taking on and off your fuel filter lid http://cyclonedieselpower.com/shop/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=292 .

o-ring problem

I just recently traded my 95 for a 02, I had the same problem since you could'nt buy the cap with the filter. It doesnt matter what brand of filter.
This is the way out.
- look at the directions, they'll tell you to have the point of the gasket up--
do the opposite
- next use a film of grease on the flat of the gasket and stick it to the cap
- now rub a little grease around the lip of the bowl
Thats seems to do it as long as you don't over tighten it. turn it tight w/your
hand and give it a little more.

Hope this works for you. No sense dumping glod on the road. Jeff
