Was looking at 2011 Ford trucks. Was telling the salesman about the expense of maintaining a Diesel engine. He said it's worse on these 2011 Diesel's. Said there's a tank on top of the fuel tank that needs refilled each oil change. Some kind of liquid that mixes with the Diesel fuel. Pricey!!
Anyone know about this??
The fuel economy savings by using the DEF (liquid) over using a full EGR will save you a few dollars every oil change.
There is something like 1.5-2MPG to be gained by using the DEF. So just figure that out over time what you would save and figure around $20 to fill the DEF tank every 7500miles.
If it's only 20 bucks to fill the DEF I can live with that. I thought it was a lot more.
Ugh, what does DEF stand for??LOL Salesman told me but I forgot??
Its around $3 a gallon. And being most newer diesels even some large semis are going to be using it (with some being over 50gallons on board) Some of the bigger gas stations by highways are going to put it in a pump like fuel. Which could bring price down more.
Also it doesnt mix with the fuel. Its a seperate tank and its sprayed into the exhaust after the turbo and it converts the bad stuff to not as bad stuff. Forgot what exactly it turns it into. You can read alot if you search for DEF

It mixes with the NOX (bad stuff) in the exhaust and chemically breaks it up into Nitrogen and Oxygen (Good Stuff).
