Someone gave me 5 gallons of diesel fuel contaminated with about 20% gasoline. Is it safe to run this through a diesel engine if it gets diluted into a 35 gallon diesel fuel tank?

No run 'em in squeeze-fire motor. Make 'em heap big trouble.
BUT what you might could do, IF you have an older non-cat vehicle, or one with a dead cat, or an elderly lawnmower, or, if you dare, a pre-OBD II vehicle, is to put it in a gas rig 1 gallon at a time on top of a full tank.
Since you are in the Bay area, you can claim to be doing mosquito control if the mix is too "rich", or you can just fog your favorite neighborhood....
Seriously, you can run it in a gas with high dilution, preferably a carb. vehicle. This will be an easy way to get rid of it, vs. the haz mat deal or dumping it in the storm sewer....
Have not put it in the tank, just checking first. Thanks for the help, will find an alternate way to get rid of it. The winter burn pile is always an option!
Geez, no offense dude but read up on how a diesel engine works in addition to this site. That's a 20k engine you came close to grenading. This kind of thing causes warranty denials for the rest of us when we get contaminated derv from a station and the stealer tires to blame us.
