cam choices???

Please help me with some cam choices, fellas. I'm looking at building a 360 with 390 rods and crank, going with the 360 pistons to hopefully get in that 9-9.5: 1 cr area. I'm wanting lots of torque down low and there is so many choices in cams out there that I wanted to here what others have used, pros and cons. Planning on a Performer intake manifold and some port work in the heads along with the 1.65 exhaust valves, maybe even the bigger intake valves as well.
Also, if there are any favorite piston that any of you like, please chime in. I'm kinda up in the air on which ones to use.
This is all going into a '76 F-250 highboy. Probably won't see much over 4500-5000 rpms. Thats why I want alot of grunt down low

Thank you,
dslman1

I think maybe you mistyped or are confused. A 360 crank with 390 rods would result in very low compression and no quench at all. Did you mead 390 crank and rods with 360 pistons? I'm running a crane cam 343941 and am happy with it. With a performer rpm and pretty stock heads it seems to run out of breath at about 4500 rpm. Perfect for a truck IMO. Others around also seem to like the 343901 and the comp cams with similar durations. I'm running KB150 pistons and am pretty happy with them. I think a might just do a cast passenger car piston (higher compression height, like the 360 piston) if I had it to do over again. kb/silvolite has lots of choices there. I think there are plenty of people who can chime in that have built lots more of these motors than me.

i have run the 901, great cam for you. The 941 would be better for a 2wd or hopped up 4x4. I ran the 901 with ported d2te heads, rpm intake and headers, any right off 2000-5000 is amazing. I ran the 901 in stock engine form also and mid 4000's is about all with exhaust manifolds.

Now I have the motor in a light 78 pos truck and have a c4se intake instead of rpm, and more carb and the thing plain screams.

Jay Brown on the FE forum did a complete dyno run of intakes awhile back and the c4se style made more torque than the performer.

as a general rule faster acceleration/velocity cams make more midrage power and torque than old grandma ramps. This works best will smaller ports like 302/351w,sbc heads and small port fe heads but not on 429,460,351c, high riser, and tunnelport heads.

I also really like the lunati voodoo cams, fast lobes, lots of lift relative to duration.

Thanks for the replies.Yes I meant a 390 crank and rods with 360 piston in a 360 block. I hope that helps some.

fordeverpower: what do you think of the Voodoo 62002? The 262 grind looks real good. Or would the 62001 be better? Would the 262 be to much cam for the low end power I'm looking for?

20 years ago I did a stock 360 with the Crane Energizer 266H10 {134042} It work real well, but now I know more about these engines and would like to build something stronger. The 941 and 901 both look good, which would be your choice?

Thank you,
dslman1

My 390 has the 901 and has a real smooth idle. Steady 18 inHg on the vacuum gauge. Not sure about the others as I haven't run em...

4.10

So the 62001 would be better? I was kinda thinking the same thing. I just don't want to over cam it.
