Help with Cam choice
I have a 1968 Thunderbird 390/315 HP I'm going to rebuild to go in the truck, The motor had been stored on a local horse farm since 1977, still had the aluminum ID tag under the coil mounting bracket, after tracking down the tag numbers it is a 68 T-bird Z code motor, 10.5 compression. When tearing it down all the bearings had ford logo and date 11/67 on the back side so I know the bearing have never been changed. Enough of the background.
I'm going back with 10 or 10.5 CR pistons, rebuild stock heads. I have a Eldelbrock Street Performer 390 Intake, New Holley 4160 series 600 cfm Carburetor, New Headers for when 390 is put in.
The truck is used only for a toy, it will never haul or pull anything, I want it to sound good and have a little jump when I hit the gas, I have looked at the Comp Cam Extreme Energy Cam (262/270 513/520) and the Crane Cam Energizer 272 H10 (272/272 533/533), These are just starting points, any and all suggestions would be appreciated.
Here is a picture of me and my truck it's going in. Just finished a two year restoration, it's crazy but the engine ran perfect two years ago when I started restoration but lost compression on # 8 cylinder when I started back driving it, so instead of rebuilding the 360 I'm going for a little more powerful 390
dropping the CR to 9.5:1 -10:1 is a wise choice with the gasoline available to us these days .
as for cams i like Lunati (usa made) check out the 62002 and 62003
