I just finished rebuilding my 1969 360 and am not sure which tranny would b good for it. I know that these motors are not optimum for racing but i am planning on dragging in it and in a few months upgrade to a 390 crank, rods and bore it out. I need a tranny that is guna b able to hit high speeds without blowing the motor. i believe my 76 390 has a NP435 HD on it but its got granny low gears did ford make a tranny wit the same sturdyness of the HD but with higher gears that was used in f100s?
help is appreciated want to get my project on the road give hondas a lil suprise
FN, Not personal at all, but your's is a very bad idea. The 360 is a lower compression engine, that doesn't rev up very well, and you can't shift that ol work truck tranny fast enough.
A designed & built 390 with a C6 would be a better direction. The ol truck would be a great delivery vehicle for hauling your race car to the track. IMHO.
Thanx for your info i appreciate you sharing some of your knowledge with me. do you think that my motor would be more suited for an offroad jeep? I am moving to colorado and was thinking about building a trail rig n using it
The 360 is a good truck engine, bad choice for racing. The Ford 360 is very different from the Jeep 360. You will need matching tranny for the Ford engine.

360/390's share the same bore: 4.05" / The difference is the stroke.
I would go for the C6 automatic behind your FE. As long as you don't overheat it, it will handle anything you throw at it. I've got three! (I can't pass up a deal!)
since you just finished rebuilding that 360 we are going to have to work with that, since your going offroad with that setup use a granny gear 4 speed.

If you want to drag it, NOTHING is faster than a built automatic transmision with a nice shift kit and good B&M type shifter. In your case, a C6 transmision. You will be in second gear while the guy with a manual transmission next to you is still thinking about it. (6 grand slam) When you build the moter up more, a stall torq converter and a line lock may be in order. For kiling Honda's, as you mentioned, build your engine and drive train to race stop light to stop light, so to speak. You cant drive your truck @ 130 mph for any lengthe of time, and your cant afford to drive a 1/8 mile racing truck on the road. So build something in the middle for street use. Smoke the other car from the line, then back off the gas and smile as they think they beat you when they finaly catch up and pass you at the 90 mph mark. You still will be able to pull hole shot's with this combination, and still afford to drive it to work.....I think you will be happy.
