i just came across 359 hd for cheap that came out of a dumptruck, and the guy selling it sais its the same pattern and block as the 360/390. now, i have never even heard of the ft series engines until i did a little ooking here, so my question is are the 359 and 360/390 close to identical to each other (except for the cranks and rods), or at least close enough that i could use the heads/headers of the 359 on a 360?
also, if anyone has specs on the 359 hd to give, tahtd be great. i literally could find NOTHING on google even about the existence of the ft series...
If you are just looking for parts to rebuild your 360, pass on it. FT engines have different front covers, cranks, bell patterns, poor heads, low compression, massive flywheels etc etc.
The 390, 410 or 428 is the one to filch parts off of.
There are many threads here on the 360, it's problems, and the most common fixes. Nowhere will you find reference to the 359....
The 359 has the same valve specs as a 361, so it's got FT heads (small ports).
NOT SURE if the 359 has the same snout as the FT (large snout) or the smaller FE snout, which would lead you to think that if it has the FE snout, that the crank is not steel but cast like the FE. The snout size will effect the type of timing cover, whether or not is has the motor mount bolted to it (FT has a mount on the timing cover).
Pass on it.
There's not a whole lot you could do with it, except MAYBE the block might be something decent, but even then, as a 359, it's not the "HD" type FT, but probably more of a lighter-duty FE/FT hybrid.
359's were mostly used in U Haul and Ryder fleet rentals that I know of. They sport cast iron cranks and were speed governed like some of the 361-391's were. I know the crank stroke was 3.50 and think (not positve on this) the bore was 4.05 same as the 360-390's. If it's cheap, real cheap it could be a good donor for a nice block. As everyone else said in heads, intake and internals are std FT and not so desireable. I say it's worth a look if you need a good block or your looking to build a inexpensive 360 type of engine. There were mostly based on the HD reverse "105" blocks.
this IS an HD model 359, sais it on like 3 different stampings on the motor (valve covers being most obvious) from 1975. for 30 bucks, i figure i might as well buy it because its not TOO far from me (across the state is far, but not to buy a cheap engine) and the guy wants 30 bucks. he said it ran good when he pulled it in the spring, just needs a fuel pump, and he'll sell me the tranny cheap too (its from a dump truck, so its probably like 13 gears...) the only problem was theres an ear broken off the tranny housing, so i dont know if thats fixable or what...
if nothing else, 30 bucks buys me a decently hard to find engine in somewhat working order that may be put in an old truck someday.

tink65, I have a 359 HD, in 72 F600 U-haul, intake date code as 1975, needing to find distributor that will work on this for sure, can you tell me where to find date codes on heads and block? Thanks, Goatman
