Let me start by saying that I can't find my camera so unfortunately I have to pics to accompany this thread...
So I finally got my ceramic coated van turbo installed yesterday compliments of Clay. As I have already pulled the turbo in the past, that step was not too difficult. The hardest part of getting the turbo out was that dang clamp on the up pipe. Once the turbo was out, it was a simple swap in of the van turbo. Install went pretty quick with no foul ups. (surprisingly)
I've got a few observations that I figured I would share: EGT's seem to be down about 100* or so. Boost is down a few PSI but it is certainly made up for. There is a little bit of lag on the bottom end, but once this thing spools up it really pulls. Thats where the lower boost is made up for. It feels so much more smooth than the stocker turbo. I'm pretty excited about this thing. I haven't even gone WOT yet, maybe between half and 3/4 throttle and it pulls quite nicely. I am seeing a little more smoke, but thats no big deal. Definitely happy with this purchase!
Well Chris that is good to hear that you are happy. So since you had them both sitting next to eachother, what is the difference in the two physically? What did it run from Clay?
Congrats on the new turbo. You said you saw a 100* drop in EGTs. What were they before and what tune were you running? Curious because I've had my van turbo for a few weeks and finally got my tunes in over the weekend and I've been comparing EGTs.
I don't know much about van turbos but I thought the purpose was more boost, less smoke, and lower EGT. Says he's got slightly lower EGT but I too am curious about the rest. Congrats on the successful swap.

Did you install a new Ball-Bearings Kit in the Turbo?
Would be great to see some Photos of the Turbo w/the Ceramic Coating.
Who did you use to coat the Turbos? I have 2 Turbos I need to have coated and always looking for great shops for coatings.
You will see more smoke at the bottom end with the van turbo. It takes a little more fuel to light it off. It should clear out in the top end. If not you need to go through your connections for a leak somewhere.

Physically the only thing that I really paid attention to was the weight. Since there is no EBPV on the van turbo it is a little bit lighter I thought. Ran me about $600 from Clay for everything.

Yeah, somewhere right around 100* drop. I ran it in 80E and 140X. 80E cruising at about 70 they were right around 500* i believe with the van turbo. In 140X I didn't get my temps above 1100* or so, but like I said I only went to about 3/4 throttle.

Sorry, shoulda been more clear in my original post. On the bottom end there is more smoke and slightly less boost. Once that thing is spooled though smoke is all but gone and boost does build much quicker on the top end.

The turbo came from Clay completely rebuilt. In fact, looks like a brand new turbo. If I can find my camera I will get some pics of it, unfortunately I will only have the after pics. Clay also took care of the ceramic coating etc. I'm sure he could certainly answer that question for ya!

That's what I meant to say lol. It is doing exactly that so I'm pretty sure everything was put back and snugged up properly.
