Front brake rotors & pads
I intend to help a buddy replace his front brake pads on a 99 Superduty F250 4x4. A few questions:
1. Do the calipers come off as on "typical" Ford products, i.e. the two rails with the rubber inserts?
2. Do the rotors slips off after the calipers are removed or are they integrated onto the hub?
3. The rotors are warped, are they thick enough to be turned or should they generally be replaced? If replaced, who has a good brand, NAPA, Autozone?
Thanks,
Biederboat

They will need to be measured for thickness and checked for runout,to determine whether they can be turned or not.
NAPA,generally speaking, carries high quality replacement parts. They generally are priced higher, but the extra cost can be,IMO,considered "insurance".
I have on a few occasions purchased parts for some automobiles from Autozone, and a couple of times I was not really pleased with the origin of manufacture.....China.

I had a '89 that had the rubber insert things. My '94 had a much better system (no rubber). I assume that the '99 did not go back to the rubber style slides.

I did mine several months ago. My biggest problem was fining a place to turn the rotors. All the shops around here did not have a machine large enough to handle the SD rotors, special adapters. I even took them to the Ford dealership and they could not turn them. I finally found a shop that works on school buses, dump trucks etc. that could turn them. I wasted 3 hours on this. Just a heads up ! You might be in trouble if you tried this on a weekend.

Front brake rotors & pads
Hi Guys,
My suggestion is not to even bother with the stock rotors. When mine warped, I order a new set for less money than Ford wanted for stock replacements! The new rotors are made by TRW and are even slotted. A friend of mine had his rotors turned and they just warped again.... so, dump the stock ones and move on to a better product.

1. Do the calipers come off as on "typical" Ford products, i.e. the two rails with the rubber inserts?
The calipers are held on by two bolts, 22 mm on the front. The bolts are glued in with Loc-Tite, so it takes quite a bit of force to get them off. No rubber inserts. Torque spec is 166 ft-lbs., I believe.
2. Do the rotors slips off after the calipers are removed or are they integrated onto the hub?
The rotors are loose on a 4x4. Loosen the calipers and the rotors slip right off the studs. Replace the anti-seize compound on the back of the rotors before re-install if you ever want to get them off again.
3. The rotors are warped, are they thick enough to be turned or should they generally be replaced? If replaced, who has a good brand, NAPA, Autozone?
How many miles? Have the rotors been resurfaced before? (You turn drums, resurface rotors). If there are a lot of miles on them, or if they ahve been resurfaced before, probably better to go with new rotors.
The OEM units are made by TRW, and many believe that they warp easily. Others have had very good luck. Autozone carries AIMCO rotors ($93). NAPA has NAPA branded rotors ($114). O'Reilly carries Brakebest brand ($63).
If you want to spend the money, go to
www.appliedrotortechnology.com
They will sell you cryo-treated and slotted rotors with Performance Friction pads for around $300 +$30-$50 shipping.
