Question Help! Brake answer needed quickly

What would make more than one brake stick? I think it's limited to both front calipers, and it's inconsistent (sometimes sticks, sometimes doesn't). Is worse in stop & go traffic. It's a 93 AWD Aerostar.

If it goes on for a while, the calipers get really hot.

Please answer ASAP if you have any knowledge on this.

Thanks,

my thoughts are that maybe the emerg brake is siezed, try pulling up your emerg brake handle and see if it is very loose...

thats my idea

I think the calipers and/or wheel cylinders are in need of a disasembly and cleaning. The black stuff found in brake fluid is rust amongst other things and they will cause calipers and wheel cylinders to stick. I know because I had to do the same on my car.

Thanks, I'm pretty sure it's not the emergency brake as when they are not sticking the brake works fine (pretty sure it's in the front only). Would the "crud" likely cause both calipers to fail at once?

It could or you could have a blockage in the lines.. You could also have a leak or a bent line or possibly a failing master cylinder.

Do you know if your calipers use steel pistons?

Some Aerostars came with phenolic pistons in the calipers. When the brakes get overheated, they can warp or expand and get jammed in the bore.

One other thing, how old is the fluid?

One of mine stuck once, and I'm thinking it was caused by the fluid boiling, and applying constant pressure to the piston. This was after a long day of lots of stop and go driving in very hot weather. I had neglected to change the fluid for too long, and it must have lost its heat capacity. After I changed the fluid, the brakes went back to performing at their normally inadequate levels.

Thanks...

looks like it was the calipers, and a good bleed job.
