Need Help...Brake Question

Just bought a 2002 Excursion Limited 4x4. Had a pre sale inspection at the Ford dealer in the town I bought it. They listed any things needing attention and priced everything out. Took it in to my local Ford dealer and they verified the work, but suggested that I do more.

Front brakes at pre sale inspection...turn rotors, new pads, check, clean and lube calipers etc.

My local dealer....although rotors still can be turned, suggested because they are old (originals) and the type of wear...replace rotor, pads, caliper etc., etc.

Rear brakes pre sale...75%

Rear brakes my local Ford dealer...should also replace those rotors as they too are showing same wear pattern and are are old (originals).

Difference obviously is a few bucks. I understand perhaps on the front to also replace calipers as well as pads, but if the rotors can be turned, why would thy suggest replacement on front and more so on back where brakes are ok?

Need some advice...can anyone shed some light on their reasoning short of jacking up the bill?

Thanks guys...appreciate any help. Need to call them in the morning with approval of what to do.

Guess my basic question is why would one replace the rotors that both dealers said could be turned, with the last dealer suggesting replacement instead. Seems odd.

Dealer-installed rotors would be pretty pricey---DIY with those parts and the cost savings over turning them is much less. Turning rotors these days has somewhat fallen out of favor since many of them don't seem to have originally been thick enough to be turned and still remain within spec.

A set of '02 rotors are pretty much at the end of their safe and useful life, turning them would be at best a temporary fix and INHO a waste of money.

I too would assume a service writer has a boat payment due, needs to crank a few grand out of a few trusting owners, their credibility being suspect in all things immediately after they say hello.

Definitely throw the most money in the front brakes but build the budget to have the rears done soon too----good brakes are ALWAYS worth more than what they cost!

If the one dealer does not have an operational on-car lathe he may not want to turn the rotors. another reason for replacement is if the cooling vanes have too much rust build-up which will interfere with cooling.
