ive had my diablo delta chip for 2 months now and it has never smoked. ive heard that when you have chips the engine will let out somke when under heavy loads. i just noticed yesterday when i naided the pedal there was some and blackish smoke that came out the back. what does this mean? is it bad or ok? i had the hp setting on the 78hp setting. i usually drive on the 54hp setting and have put the pedal to the metal many times and have never seen any smoke. anyone know what the smoke means?
Its normal. It means the engine is dumping a lot of fuel to spool the turbo quickly. Generally, the more HP a chip puts out, the more smoke. 125HP chips can put out a tornado of smoke!
Black smoke is unburnt fuel. It takes the engine to burn fuel to make heat to turn the turbocharger to make horsepower.
The more fuel pumped into the engine, the more horsepower you can develop (to a point) and after that the unburnt fuel goes out the pipe.
Back when the diesel was first on the road, the drivers used to try to make flames come up the stack. The more fuel pumped into the engine, the more flame would go up the stack. This was fuel that the engine could not burn.
Along comes the turbocharger to put more air into the engine to burn the fuel that was being forced into the engine and cause it to burn the fuel ... so ...
Now we needed to put more fuel into the engine to choke the turbocharger. Therefore, the endless challenge to get the engine to burn more and more fuel to make more and more horsepower.
Along with the turbo and the extra fuel, we are now "mixing" fuel with nitros, propane and also adding water injection to make HORSEPOWER. Oh, we are also changing timing while doing all this other stuff. While making this horsepower, one has to be careful and prevent "MELTDOWN" or damage to internal parts of the engine from too much heat and too much boost pressure. Once the turbochargers were added to the engines, the engineers realized that it is not just a fire in the cylinders anymore , now it is similar to a torch in each cylinder.
Depending on the state you live in, YOU should be careful not to make too much smoke (pollution).
Hope this explains the process of making black smoke and the ramifications of making too much smoke.
Hey unless its blue smoke you are fine welcome to the wonderful world of desiel ownership. Oh by the way you cant truly be a member of the club unless you really enjoy the smell of that smoke TAKE CARE CYA
When is is smoking white? when the engine is cold and when it's first cranked or does it smoke white when it's warmed up. Light colored smoke on cold start up is normal and should disappear after a few miles of driving. If it's smoking white after it's warmed up you may have a bad O-ring allowing coolant into the combustion chamber. Are you having to add coolant and don't see a leak? If not, then your probably alright.
