well i bought my 02 f350 7.3 diesel last november and i've honestly never seen it smoke. now what i mean by smoke is under hard acceleration. now when i see 6.0's and dura's get on it a huge puff of black smoke comes out the pipe. now i understand that some of them have chips, but i know stockers smoke also. now i've seen older 7.3's smoke too...like 94-97, cept they smoke more blue than black.
also..from a stand still on dry pavement-blacktop i cannot break the tires loose, is this normal or am i underpowered. now i do admit she does wonderful break stands but nothin from a dead stop.
Too much is overfuel, little or no smoke is lean or perfect fuel air mix...hard to say sometimes. My stuck injector dumps fuel a little too much and rolls black once in a while. Troy
my truck does not smoke at all with my hypermax 90hp chip, just a dark haze at full throttle. it will only smoke in overdrive and i nail the throttle with my 10k mod turned up
Mine with the DP chip doesn't smoke either?? Oh well, the power is definitely there!
With my DP chip on the stock setting I see no smoke at all...40hp tow safe shows little or none...80hp economy shows a black haze when I mat it...120hp dumps so much black smoke when I floor it I get scared!! As far as performance gains go, stock is self explanatory...40hp is noticeable but not impressive...80hp is my favorite because the difference is incredible and all the power is very useable...120hp is just nuts and it makes it very easy to break something without many more expensive mods.
The 6.0's and duramaxes that you're seeing flow out black smoke when they take off are most likely chipped. They just don't smoke stock, hardly at all. For your truck to smoke you need more fuel, or poorer atomization. Older diesels may smoke because they injectors or however they're being fueled aren't getting the fuel atomized and burnt very well, so you've got a lot of excess unburnt fuel (black smoke) coming out.
Get a chip from Jody or whomever you like and you'll see some smoke. Injectors will get you even more smoke.
My 99 will roll black smoke at full throttle. I bought it used and don't know if it has a chip, never went looking. If it does have a chip, where would it be located? The truck is an early 99 BTW.
If it has a chip, it will be plugged into the PCM which is under the dash, next to the parking brake pedal.
It may not have a chip, though, but could have a tune loaded onto the PCM, in which case you'd see nothing. If it has a lot of black smoke I'm guessing it's not stock in some way, or has something wrong like a clogged intake or injector spraying poorly. If you don't notice any driving or power issues, you've probably got a tuned truck.
My truck smokes a bit on hard acceleration, not very noticable though. Only mods i've done to it are the kwik filter. It smokes to if I just rev the engine when im standing still. I don't know if it did this before the filter or not.
