I have read post where individuals want black smoke and the response is get a chip or programmer. I have a Superchips programmer and run the 80hp setting and I do not get hardly any black smoke when I romp down on it. I know it works because the truck runs like a raped ape. Should I be concerned with this? Plus, what would be the dangers of running an 80hp propane injection on top of this?
Black smoke is BAD. It's unburned or partially burned fuel being dumped out the exhaust. It means the engine is running inefficiently.
Take note of the newer heavy trucks, they don't smoke, even under heavy load, like the older trucks did. Advancements in electronic engine management have made them FAR more efficient and eliminated the black smoke.
You'd probably get a better response on this question in the 7.3 forum. Anyway, the fact that you don't have smoke is no biggie. It just means your truck is burning all of the fuel being dumped in there. Usually it will smoke until boost builds up, and once the boost pressure is built up, it will stop smoking. On the propane subject, I wouldn't add it with the programmer. It's best to get a custom burned chip for propane that changes the injector timing to deal with the propane. I guess it's similar to backing the timing down when you're running nitrous on a gas engine. Propane can be used safely when you keep the setting where it's supposed to be and don't over do it. When you start tweaking it and upping the juice you can run into some problems. If you get propane, get the custom chip designed for propane, and leave it where it should be, otherwise you might have a nice new inspection hole in your block that shouldn't be there.
I agree with Waxy, black smoke is unburned fuel. Unless you are looking to make black smoke don't be concerned. Personally I'm not a fan of the smokin' trucks. It's what gives diesels a bad name to the non-diesel owners.
No black smoke=burning all the fuel=better fuel economy
I have notice with mine if I don't change the airfilter on time I get black smoke with mine. Also watch were you get your fuel because I have notice if it is poor quilty it's going to smoke more too.I run shell diesel in my truck now and only that for 2 resons the smokeing issue & the truck idiles better the shifter do'es not jump around as bad. Good luck
