Truck is new to me and has a check engine light on. I'm guessing it will probably have a number of codes. I have an Actron code scanner that I can read and clear codes and do some data stream watching. Is this enough of a tool to get a good idea of what the problem would be or do I need something more diesel specific? I'm assuming that OBD II is OBD II no matter what and it might be all I need.
Won't have a chance to hook up to it until Monday but wanted to know if I was going to have some luck with the scanner I have.
Actron will pick up a few codes, but not enough to do anything with. I to have the actron, nice unit, wrong vehical. A/E is the only thing that is cheap enough ( that I am aware of ) for a you and me, ( assuming ). But on top of A/E, you need a laptop or I believe a decent PDA ( palm brand if I remember correctly ).
I've had good success diagnosing problems on my truck using an old Diablo Predator tuner that has some diagnostic tools built in.
If that Actron will do what you say it does, it should be enough to get you pointed in the right direction.
No matter what tool you use the best one is between your ears.
Use it wisely and you cannot go wrong.
Dan, it doesnt seem to get all of the codes.. I dont know why, but I have read mine on the actron, and then went to a friends shop to read the rest. So you can get started, just may not be enough.
Thanks for the suggestions.... A/E? What scanner is that? I don't have a Diablo but may have access to some laptop software through some friends. It has a Banks plugged in and attached to the lower portion of the dash.
I get to pick up the truck on Monday so haven't been able to scan it with the Actron. I'll scan it when I pick it up, clear them and see what reoccurs. It will give me a chance to watch the VSS and see if I'm getting a good signal to a faulty cluster or need a sensor.
Engine seems to run strong, oily externally. I'm going to put a new filter in it for the drive home, maybe a new fuel filter too.
Got the scanner working, even though after the engine clean, the SES light went out. I came up with only one code stored: P1247 Turbo/Super Boost Pressure Low. I cleared it and it hasn't come back. Could have been there for a while. We'll see if anything reoccurs on the next test drive.
Will have to see about getting one of those other scanners, this one really doesn't do much with the vehicle data streams, so it's obvious how limited it is with the 7.3.
