Hi Guy I need some advise Ive been a ford fan since before i could drive well legally. I currently have a F-150 01 Lariat w/5.8 was very happy till i bought my first camper. We use it about 6-8 times a year the camper weighs around 4800lbs. Im not really happy any more with the 150. I have the chances to buy a 08 250 6.4 today its a step down you know only XLT but my *** can live with out warmers LOLOL so my question is this I drive like 3 miles a day normally am i making a mistake getting to much truck? Yeah i can pull my skidstear home once in a while and my old jeep here and there. Ive never owned a diesel except for my Freightliners and Big Trucks.
HELP please give me your honest opinions.
Thanks sorry post so long

I'm new to this forum, but yes, you'll be regenerating every time you fire it up if you drive it 3 miles a day. Unless you let it warm up for an hour before you leave, and an hour after you come back...(not that long, but you get the gist) Your F150 sounds like the right truck. Get a new F150. It'll throw that trailer around no problem.
keep in mind that to effectively burn off the condensation that forms in the oil from sitting, the engine must operate for around 20 minutes at operating temperature

Actually it'll be quite the opposite. To go into regen the engine has to be warmed up; I've never seen a regen start below 186 degrees ECT.
It depends on your use, to be honest. How many miles do you put on it other than going to/from work? As long as you can get it good and hot a couple times a week I doubt you'd have any problems.
DO NOT idle the truck to let it warm up! This causes problems with the EGR valve as well as the turbo vanes. Contrary to popular belief modern diesel engines DO NOT like to idle! Nearly every time someone comes on here explaining that they just had their EGR valve replaced, somewhere or other they almost always mention they idle the truck a lot. Start it up, give it a few seconds, and start driving.
Seems like people that see the fewest problems with these engines are those who put it to work towing things. If not, most recommend frequent WOT runs to freeway speed to help keep things in your EGR and turbo systems blown out.
If you want the truck, go for it. Just make sure you do some driving that's NOT 3 miles each way.
ok thanks tom i mean i do drive more at least id say once a week and yeah i can take it highway at least once per week the F-150 seems just to evenly matched for the weight of my camper and my buddy's leave me in the dust. Id like to take it on longer trips but my truck has all it wants around here in the flat lands. Oh and tom you have the same truck im looking at so one more question the 250s with the 6.4 would they get better or worse mileage then the 5.8s Ive seen alot of 250s with the 5.8s also would that be a better truck for me?
Thanks for all your ideas guys
If u only drive 3 miles a day forget the diesel and go with a v ten. I have a 08 V10 with 430 cogs and it sits for weeks at a time and some days i only drive it 10 or 20 miles. Last month i did drive it 800 miles in 2 days towing car trailer. I is happy on long or short runs. Oh and for the price of a diesel truck u could easily get but warmers and take a trip to the carabein and have money left over.
ok kscrude then i guess my next question would be would the V10 get as good or better fuel mileage on short runs like i do? which would be the best my fear is you put my 5.8 in an 8000lb truck the mileage and power would really suck sorry guys for all the questions but about to blow $30,000 thanks for the help.
oh and what size its the V-10 please what liter is it referred to so when i look for truck i can plug it in and man i get lost in the lingo here hehehehe

Your F150 should be a 5.4. They dropped the 5.8 in 96.
I would try to get a V10 rather than the 6.4, but thats just me.
With that kind of driving you will never make up the $8,000 upgrade, there is only a slight fuel mileage diffrence.
