Can this tire be repaired?

I took this tire to a tire shop, and they said they could not repair it because it was too close to the sidewall. They said the plug wouldn't hold because the tire is too flexible at this point. It is a nail in the tire, and the nail is not big at all. What you see in the picture is about 1/2 size of a pencil eraser head or even less than half the size. I asked them to repair it anyway. They said they couldn't cause of company policy. The best they could do, was put on a new tire, or put on my spare. I bought a new one. I kept the old one. I'm by no means an expert on this. I'm just curious about opinions. I've had bigger nails closer to the firewall in the past repaired with no problem. Should I keep the tire, and have it repaired somewhere else? Or, does my daughter get a big tire swing from a 20 inch wheel? Thanks in advance.

I think they just wanted to sell a new tire. I would have no problem with plugging that tire.

Repairable.

But do it with a patch through the back rather than a plug.

Much more reliable and permanent.

Good idea seeing as it's already off the wheel. It's always better to patch one if you have the option.

Most shops that I have delt with these days use a plug patch combo. A plug alone I think you will be fine. The problem with a hole that close to the edge is that when the tire heats and cools down, it expands and contracts causing the patch not to adhear to the tire properly. When I was a tech years ago, I found that it was hit and miss so I would try it and see what happens, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Thank You all for your replies! The tire in this post is from one of my trucks. It was on the front drivers side. Not long after posting this thread, I found another nail in the driver's side rear! To add insult to injury, I found a nail in the tire of another one of my trucks! I had it repaired at a tire shop today. The past five years have been bad with me and nails in my tires! But to have three tires have nails within a week and a half is nuts! I'm beginning to wonder if this was on purpose. I haven't driven through any construction sites lately.

Another question; That tire That I showed a picture of, What is the best way to store it while it is not on my truck? I've kept tires before in the past, and they seem to rot when not being used.

Store tires in a cool, dry (50% relative humidity) place.

If you are getting a lot of nails, try to avoid driving / parking too close to the curb / gutter / etc.

That is the biggest source of nails.
